Spotted Gum Hardwood, Bronte

This beautiful beachside home in Bronte had a hardwood deck which was built about 15 years ago, around the same time of the house.

Unfortunately, the builders had used internal grade framework fixed straight onto the concrete slab below, which had meant it had completely rotted and was a safety hazard and unusable.

We removed all the existing boards and framework, cleaned the slab then constructed a H4 LowDeck timber frame which is specifically designed to be laid close to the ground.

You will see we have packed the framework up off the concrete slab by a minimum of 10 mm to allow drainage of water underneath and ventilation.
As additional protection we also applied G-Tape joist protection to all the top of the framing timber.

The owners love hardwood and wanted a board to match their internal Spotted Gum flooring, so we laid this stunning Australian Spotted Gum 136 mm wide board.

As the deck was installed so close to the ground, to prevent the board from cupping or bowing, we applied a coat of CUTEK Extreme Oil to all faces of each board. This will prevent moisture absorption from underneath the board and avoid potentially cupping or splitting.

Being a coastal property and being adjacent to a saltwater swimming pool, every fixing we used on this project was 316 marine grade stainless steel, anything else would rust in a few years or less.

After fixing down the boards, we applied another coat of CUTEK Extreme oil to protect the timber from harmful UVA /UVB rays and to bring out the stunning tones and variation of the boards.

With regular ongoing maintenance, which we can provide, the family will get many years of enjoyment from their beautiful Spotted Gum deck!
